disclaimer: im not sure if this is the place to post this.

I live in a relatively large home.

I need a way of speaking with other people within the home.

I spend maybe 16 hrs a day in front of the PC.

I need a way for other people to speak with me via my pc without them having to be infront of a pc.

is there such thing?

I've seen a few radio intercom but they do not connect to computers. would be nice for me to have one of those little boxes in every room and they press a button and they can speak with me while im using a headset infront of the pc, and ideally vice versa.

Solution
Try Intercom 1.0.0.0 for PC , alternatively a few FRS/GMRS two-way radios like these may work out just as well (and not tied to PC).

The more expensive ones like these have headphone and mic connections, so it's possible you can adapt them for PC use using your PC headphone and mic jacks.
don't you need a phone or computer for discord/teamspeak and the like? would be rather inconvient because some of the people dont use phones (well smart phone) and computer, or they dont use it constantly.

so say i need to get some1, i call them via discord, and they're not infront of the pc/phone or its turned off then i wouldn't be able to reach them.

So, you need at two independent systems:
- the person is at his/her PC, call him/her over Discord/Skype/etc
- the person is NOT at the PC, call them using Intercom
- the person is in the hallway - shout

You see - there's not a universal solution, so you should settle on something common, knowing that it is not going to work everytime for everyone.

Will that work when you don't have internet available? I have a few FRS/GPRS radios we always use them camping / off roading which IMO is very, very handy unless you absolutely don't expect to go off the grid.

I have no idea, I have only one Echo Dot, but I suppose Alexa without internet cannot even recognize what you are asking her for.

I think I understand what you're trying to do. I setup some security cams around my house, and today I saw the mailman delivering mail, and I saw my son jumping on the trampoline in the backyard, and I thought, wouldn't it be cool If I could use my computer speakers/mic to talk to the mailman and tell something to my son from my home office. I'm sure there are solutions like the walkie talkies, or the intercom software, but neither of those will do what you're trying to do all being controlled from your PC. I think so the solution is building it using an arduino. You would essentially communicate to the board using a serial port, and you could have toggle switches or buttons on the board to direct the broadcast to a specific room. I came across your post because I'm looking to see if someone has already done something similar.
