I have several rooms in my house that have ethernet ports in them. The ports are all wired, but they all terminate at the same point (my basement) and are not connected to anything (so all wires are connected to a port but nothing on the other end). One of the ports is next to my router/modem combo. If I were to connect my router/modem to the ethernet port and then connect all the terminated ends to an ethernet switch would the network then connect all ports and allow me access to the internet?

Solution
Yes, connect the router to a switch and then connect the network cables to the switch. This should activate the ports in your rooms.

Sounds about right.

CONNECTED in Windows's lingo actually means "I can't see the Internet" and NOT referring to any of your wiring connections. One learns that as one goes along. :)

Somebody should write a book tittled WINDOWS DICTIONARY.

There is a joke about IBM on the web because (of course) they too have their own lingo. They call something FIBER CHANNEL, blah-blah, translation? A CABLE! 😀
