I bought a Rosewill Hive 550W as it was a Tier 2a PSU (http://www.eggxpert.com/forums/thread/323050.aspx) and I was thinking that a GTX 770 would be too far out of financial reach. It turns out that is not completely true as I've found a $300 Zotac GTX 770. (Budget goal is $700, max is $750; Tentative build with GTX 760 is below).

I read multiple contradictory answers about whether or not a 550W PSU is safe for use with a GTX 770. I wanted to get more opinions on whether my specific build would be safe or not.

If it is relevant, I will only be using one 1080p monitor for gaming (whenever I do dual monitors, it is solely for schoolwork or using the internet).

Unfortunately, I bought it on rebate and I cut-off the UPC already. If it weren't for that maybe I could.

It WILL work, but you will be straining the PSU. It will be loud, and likely die faster then normal. NVidia recommends having 42A on the 12V rail with 600W. I think Nvidia knows what they are talking about.

To answer your question, yes its safe. But if you can return your PSU, its best to do so and get a higher wattage.

Sigh... I can't return this thing, I can try to sell it used on Amazon marketplace and get a good 600W for $50-60 or I can settle for GTX 760 and replace the PSU whenever I upgrade that. The former may stretch my budget, so I am leaning to the latter.

Ouch...

Oh well, pcpartpicker shows 425W when I edit your list to put a GTX 770 in there instead of the GTX 760. That Hive 550W can handle it. It won't be at ideal efficiency but it should work. Replace it when you can, OK?

How long do you think the card would last? With the GTX 770 and keeping the Hive I am at the limit of my budget, if I build in March, I wouldn't imagine being able to scrounge up for a new PSU until June-ish.
