So a couple of years ago I built my first PC, i was so excited about it. It worked fine for most games until more demanding games came out it started to struggle and freeze. I now see massive fps drops on games like assetto corsa, BF1, GTA 5, etc. I have also noticed that my friends load in to games quicker the me? Is that down to my hard drive? Because I've got a wired connection and have fibre optic.

The PC I'm using now is:

  • FX 6300
    8gb ddr3
    EVGA GTX 970
    1tb storage space
    Zalman Z11 Plus Case

I've got a few ideas on the PC Upgrade that I wish to have, like an I7 (or something at this range) and a 500GB SSD but I'm inexperienced in what is best for a high end gaming and editing rig.

I wish to keep my gtx 970 as i feel upgrading to a 10 series wouldn't be worth it at the moment as my proccessor is the main problem.

I'd also would prefer to keep the same case if possible as i like the look of the case, but i need to swap out the fans due to them not being the best quality.

Please Can Anyone Help Me? My budget is around £870 but i could stretch to £1000 if needed.

Thanks

They just released 8th gen, so it will be awhile. I just want to point out that a 1070 is a pretty sizable jump over a 970, and with a 1k budget, you can squeeze one in.

Which is your psu model?

Nice spread of options from M04D18, the R5 1600 is a fine part at a reasonable cost and he's added some good RAM along with a decent SSD.
The i5 8600K build is a much faster option and the one to go for if you plan on moving up to a fast HD 9 1080 ) display later on-adding an SSD won't exceed your budget either.

Here's Intel build that closely matches his R5 1600 overall:

Thanks for the quick reply,
I think i need to get a new psu, i quickly picked up the one i've got now which is cheap 500 watt psu (i think from EVGA) its 80 + efficiency. Have you got any suggestion?

Yeah if you want to buy new components, you will have to upgrade your PSU or you'll be stuck with an £1000 paperweight. I would suggest pretty much anything from Seasonic or a higher end EVGA model.

This would do just fine.

I would indeed change VGA as soon as you can if you really want to keep playing at high settings.
But yes, 10/7nm is coming next year, which is not too far away, if you can wait, might be worth if.

Do you know roughly when Intel will be releasing there 9th gen?

They just released 8th gen, so it will be awhile. I just want to point out that a 1070 is a pretty sizable jump over a 970, and with a 1k budget, you can squeeze one in.

Yeah after looking at the performance increase from the 970 to the 1070, I leaning towards the 1070 idea (thanks by the way), I might save up a little more and spend some extra cash on the r7 1700 as well, as it has got more cores which will benefit small me and save time when i'm rendering. It also an extra £50 which isn't to much extra for an extra 2 cores or 4 threads.
