I am having trouble setting up my router to connect to the Internet. I am currently renting a basement unit and I have an Ethernet port running upstairs to the owner's floor. I have verified that port is active by plugging my desktop into that port and being able to access the Internet. I have also verified that all the Ethernet cables are working.

I have a Linksys WRT54GL flashed with Tomato 1.28. The 'Internet' light on my router is lit up, and the Tomato 'Status Overview WAN Gateway' IP address is 192.168.1.1. I have currently tried plugging my computer's ethernet cable to the back of the router, and connecting my phone to my router's WiFi.

Is there anything further I can do to debug why my router cannot connect to the Internet?

Here are my Tomato logs. I'm not sure why the date is Dec 31.

You have your own router that you use to connect to in the basement, and it's connecting to their router upstairs? Shot in the dark, have you disabled DHCP on your router? I know having DHCP on, on two devices could cause some interference.

Also, are the two routers bridged?

That router should be in a trash can it is so old but It will work I guess.

Make sure you have this properly cabled. If you are using the WAN port to connect upstairs make sure that the ip range you use on the LAN is not the same. What makes me suspect that you have the same subnet is your pc asks for a IP outside the scope of this routers DHCP but still within the same subnet. Your PC has to have learned that IP from someplace and I suspect it learned it when you tested directly cabling it.

If you are using the LAN port to connect upstairs you need to reconfigure this devices as a AP. Running 2 dhcp servers will mess up both your devices as well as the ones upstairs.

  • Turn off and unplug the modem.
  • Turn off the modem router and computers.
  • Plug in the modem and turn it on. Wait 2 minutes.
  • Turn on the modem router and wait 2 minutes.
  • Turn on the computers.
Maybe not appropriate advice, when the modem and primary router aren't yours.

I am thinking that the LAN subnet on the WRT is the same as the "WAN" subnet that the primary router is providing and that is confusing the router. Set your LAN subnet to a more unique range than 192.168.1.x. Set it to 192.168.99.x or something.

If you are just connecting to the landlords connection, get a switch or wireless access point for wireless, or both. Not a router. If you have a router, you will need to configure it for access point use, which should be in the manual on how to do that.
