How do I change the settings in my router?

You configure your router by using it's web-based configuration utility, using a wired connection, not a wireless connection.

Type the router's IP address into the web browser's address bar, then press <enter>. You'll then see a prompt asking for the router's default login details. Your router's setup manual should tell you the IP address you need to type in to the web browser, and the default login info.

A router's IP number varies by router brand but this is the most common one:

D-Link, Netgear or Linksys routers: 192.168.1.1


Or go to the router manufacturer's website (support section) and you can get the info there.

I have tried numerous times using the ip address but all I get is an error message. I have checked all of my properties & they are fine.
