Hello!

I have a chance to upgrade my current internet to 200/50 mbps or 500/100. My current router is a totally old one, so it won't be able to handle this speed...
So my question is, can anyone recommend me a router, which can handle 500/100 mbps or at least 200/50 wireless?
Max speed in wireless is important, because I can't use it wired... My laptop knows AC wifi connection.

Thank you for your help!

I would look at the Asus RT-AC68U. It has one of the highest wireless download speeds. But even it tops out at about 315Mbit/s actual throuput. Take a look here for things like WAN to LAN throughput, wireless speeds, etc.

There are a couple of other routers that are just out that may be able to go a little faster but I would hesitate to purchase those as they are brand new and have not had all the problems worked out yet.

The main issue is the only way to get rates like that are to run multiple streams something like torrent. The problem is most the charts you see for router tests only test a single stream of data between 2 machines with close to 0 latency between them. When you run multiple session though a router it must keep track of all the nat entries etc. There are very few tests that say what happens if I have 100 people behind a router how much data can they together generate.

This is even worse when you consider wireless. If you run a single machine that can have all the bandwidth you can get some fairly high numbers but if you even run a second connection it drops a huge amount.

It likely doesn't matter unless you are also considering commercial router/firewalls in your selection process. Pretty much you buy the asus ac68u or the netgear r7000. They are the fastest devices you can get. Can they actually run at the rates you want in a real environment compared to some of the testing sites. You will have to try and then come back and tell us.

The main issue with a question like this is what is going to run on the connection. It takes a very different router for someone who has a apartment building or maybe a internet cafe on this type of connection compared to a single machine running torrent.

Thanks for the fast response!

I would like to max this speed via torrent, so your guessing was right :)
The router will be about 4 meters from the laptop (no wall or anything).
Actually i checked both of your suggested routers before I asked you guys and they seemed really fine.
The main problem is, I just can't decide which connection should i buy... If the router can handle that 500mbps then of course that would be awesome but if not, then i will stick with the 200 mbps.

If you are going to mainly use wireless I would not get the 500Mbps plan as much of it would be wasted. If you use wired connections, then it is possible to use the 500Mbps speed.
Well that is download. I just saw your comment about torrent. That uses upload speeds also, so the faster upload could be of use on the 500/100 plan.

Since upload speed is not that important for me, I will get the 200Mbps and hopefully the router will fully use it. :)
