Router is limiting bandwidth

Hello community,

I'm experiencing this annoying problem with my router. I have a TP-LINK model "TL-WR741ND" wireless router which is limiting my 6Mbits bandwidth connection at 1,8~2,2Mbits, either through ADSL cable or wireless. I recently updated its firmware and i'm absolutely ignorant about network advanced configuration. If i connect directly to the modem i get the 6Mbits i pay for, but the router seems to short it to less than 3.

My connection is:

Wall--(telephone cable)--Modem--(ADSL cable)--Router--(Wi-Fi/Cable)--PC

So, for you experts: Is there any configuration or whatever i could modify to solve this problem?

Please help me, i can't use internet, my computer is far away from modem and can't connect directly to it.

Solution

Wireless is governed by 802.11 standards. Of that, there are several flavors: A, B C, and N. C and N play nicely together with no problems. Throw a device into your network that is using an 802.11B standard and the entire network slows down to that speed, including the faster C and N networks. Some tidbits for your to read:

But even a B device should theoretically run faster than 3mb/s
wireless can be iffy. Lots of devices emit EM that could interfere with the signals in addition to your neighbors wireless signals messing with your signals. Try placing your router higher up on the wall so nothing is blocking its signal. Try changing the router's channel to something that doesn't conflict with your neighbor's.

I wrote it on the post but i say it again: It limits my bantwidth even if i connect with cable.

If the answer is not in there, replace it.

Well thanks for the try, but honestly, if i ask here is because i expect someone more instructed in the subject could close me to the most possible problems. If i could understand every words, concepts and initials the whole router manual contains and i were disposed to study all the matters about routers and networks configurations, i wouldn't be asking in a forum.

I don't mean to offend, really. Thanks again.

You mean the capacity of the router or of my internet service?

-Router capacity: 150 Mbit/s
-Internet service: 6 Mbit/s (600kb)
-Speed connecting through router (same for wired or wireless): 2.2 Mbit/s (max.)
-Speed connecting directly to modem: 6.2 Mbit/s

Its a consumer grade router. Don't make it so difficult. find the reset button, reset it to factory defaults and then try it. If its still limiting your connection speed, replace it. There is no magical setting that's going to fix a crappy router.

I'll try that when i get home, but you really think that a router which says 150Mbit/s wireless speed can't handle even 6Mbit/s? Really, my internet speed is not that big to handle.

things break. things don't always work as advertised

Well, i suppose that's all you can give me. Thank you.

I'm not exactly sure what you mean with "B devices", if you mean if i have more than one devices using wi-fi then no, i don't. If you mean if i have another wireless device around then yes, K&M.

B will never run at 11M unless in an anechoic chamber. In the real world it will top out around 5.5 at best

oops, I meant 3mb/s and you are correct.

Finally, my internet provider sent me a new wi-fi modem which works absolutely amazing, i'm even downloading at 750+ Kb/s. I don't know what was the problem with the other one, but i'm not wasting more of my time or yours.

Thanks a lot for your assistance. I'm selecting BA egilbe that was who participate most and who has good knowledge about the thing. Thanks to you all friends.

Have a similar problem with a TPlink WR841N. I have 2 exactly same routers and same problem.
Both worked perfectly with static ip but when my ISP changed to PPPoe now I get 4mb/s instead of 15mb/s.

What can I do?
