Router not getting internet connection when hooked up to modem.

I have an Arris DG950A modem, and even though it has wireless capabilities built in, it doesn't work the best. So I bought a Netgear AC1000 wireless router in hopes of improving my wireless connection in my house. I have hard reset my modem, connected the two in different orders, hard reset the router, and still the router is not getting internet connection. I can see the routers network pop up on my computer, but when connected, there is no internet. All cables are plugged into the proper ports. Any insight into why this is occurring would be much appreciated!

Unplug everything including the connection from the modem to the wall (this will be a coax if you have cable internet) and all power connections.
Wait a minute in between these steps:
1. Plug the power and whatever connection you have back into the modem.
2. Plug the power into the router
3. Plug the Ethernet cable into 1 of the yellow ports on the modem then plug the other end into the blue port on the router.

Connect to the routers WiFi and see if you get internet. If not, come back and we will troubleshoot further.

Have you connected either a desktop or laptop via Ethernet cable to the router to see if it is just a wireless issue?
You say you can connect to the new router network, have you run ipconfig /all to see what ip info you are getting?
Does turning off IPV6 on the desktop/laptop make a difference?

I have not connected directly to the router via ethernet, to do that I will have to move my desktop unfortunately. IPV6 has been off. The indicator for wireless connectivity on the router is red instead of green. I'm wondering if it has something to do the modem's settings, maybe not allowing the router to connect because it itself is producing the wireless network. I don't know, I'm still a noob.

I did ipconfig /all but I'm not seeing anything out of the ordinary.

So by connecting the Ethernet cable from the modem to the blue port on the router you are turning the router into it's own network essentially.
So right now you see both your old wireless connection and the new one form the desktop?
I would login to the configuration page of the router and see what it says for internet status. Mine will tell me if it is getting internet or not. But if the router is not getting internet then the problem might be with the modem.

I now see your modem is pretty old. You may need to put it in bridge mode so it will pass the internet connection onto the router.

I have personally never had to do this but this could be why it isn't working the way you have it now.

Turning one of them into a bridge will be best. If you turn your modem/router into a bridge don't plug anything else into it, except your WAN port on your router or you risk not being behind a NAT.

I use a nested router at my house and it works. Look for DNS settings in your router and see if they are auto pulling. You may be able to manually type it in if you can look it up on your modem/router. You also don't want their LAN IP ranges to be the same. If your router/modem is 192.168.1.1/24 then make your router 192.168.5.1/24. Making one a bridge will avoid trouble shooting a nested router problem.
