I'll be streaming 1080p media from my NAS on at most two devices (HTPC and a Roku 3 via Plex).

My connection is 40 Mbps/10 Mbps.

I've taken a look at three routers that I've seen recommended by the users on this forum and I'm looking at an ASUS RT-N56U as my choice, but I'm getting scared by the reviews of these routers on Newegg so I'd like a better opinion.

Nothing wrong with that one. It's bigger brother the RT-N66U is kind of the gold standard for an N router right now.

Even more important than the router is the layout of your residence and how strong the signal can be at the points it is needed. Are you planning on streaming wirelessly? Does your media consist of Blu-Ray rips (20-40Mbps and can push the limits of an N network) or online digital content (5-8Mbps which should be handled no problem)?
