Have a surfboard 6190 modem, and looking for a good router to pair with it.

Household wifi devices: couple of fire sticks, Xbox one, gaming pc. Most simultaneous wifi use would be streaming a movie in Hd while online gaming.

Have been looking at the Asus rt-ac87u. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Solution
Asus make good routers if that is your question. The router you have selected is likely already overkill for devices you have. Don't get sucked in by the bigger number in better trap.

For example having 4x4 mimo requires that your end devices also have 4 antenna. If your end devices are like most that have only 2 antenna the best you can get is 2x2 mimo. It will work fine with a 4x4 router but you are spending money for a feature you likely will never use.

The numbers you see have nothing to do with how strong the wireless signals will be. The power level is regulated by the goverment and almost all routers...even cheap ones..transmit at the maximum legal power. Again it is your end devices that cause most the problems...

Again it is your end devices that cause most the problems since many of them do not transmit at full power because they try to save battery power.

For you average person a router that claims 1200 or 1450 speeds will work as good as one that has bigger numbers. It would be other software features that makes all the difference....here again asus is great because they use the same basic software image on all their routers.

Solution
Only thing you have to consider when looking at the more expensive routers is the CPU and RAM when you want to use VPN client.

Other than that the cheaper ASUS router will do the job for basic routing tasks.
