Router stops responding for a minute once in a few hours

So I have a Virgin Media Super Hub 2 which has a problem where it stops responding every once in a while and everything is affected (LAN and Both Wifi Channels)
In order to get it back on I had to wait for 5 minutes or so or disable my adapter the re-enabling it. (Also Windows Troubleshooting works but takes a long time and it says Gateway not available)
And in the worst case reboot the router.

So I tried to fix it by buying an Asus RT-N66U to use in modem mode but it has the same problem, except this time Wifi stays on but LAN is still affected, the LAN icon in Windows doesn't have the caution sign and instead of having to do something, it comes back on in about half a minute.

So clearly there are big improvements but I was hoping for a rock solid connection which never drops out, what can I do?

Finally I get this message when trying to access the router when it's in the middle of not responding:
"Settings have been updated. Web page will now refresh. Changes have been made to the IP address or port number. You will now be disconnected from RT-N66U. To access the settings of RT-N66U, reconnect to the wireless network and use the updated IP address and port number."

Any help is appreciated, I've been putting up with this issue for a year or 2 now!
Thanks

First, you need to find out what stops working. run a "ping -t [computer]" between two local computers, and when your internet stops working, see if your ping starts getting timeouts.

Once we find out if it's a local network issue or Internet, it'll narrow down the issue.

OK, I will try that and see what happens. Also I forgot to mention the LAN computers in my house are connected via Powerline adapters, not sure if that is a factor but thought I'd mention it in case.
