So because of my network card in desktop being of poor quality I've been routing the WiFi through my laptop into my desktop via ethernet.

Unfortunately I accidentally changed the IP configuration settings on the adaptors on both devices to 'automatic' and now I can't figure out how to get it working again. Any advice on the correct settings would be much appreciated.

Operating systems are windows 10 and it had been working perfectly until I changed settings because I was trying to move files from laptop to pc via ethernet.

On the connection between the laptop and the desktop:
- set manual IP addresses, like 192.168.10.1 and 192.168.10.2; netmask 255.255.255.255. On laptop don't assign gateway. On desktop, assign laptop' IP address 192.168.10.1 as gateway, and any DNS server you like, or 192.168.10.1 again.
