[SOLVED] RT-AC87U AC2400 - Wifi issues

Dear all,

I am using a RT-AC87U AC2400 router and overall I am quite happy with it. I have no issues with the direct connection. My problem lays within the Wifi connection.

I have every now and then a timeout. Now and then means, when sending around 1000 ping requests, I receive on average 2-3 timeouts. This leads to issues when downloading (connection lost) and streaming (quality buffers).

Mostly, I use standard settings in terms of band etc. The router is on the most current firmware and freshly reset. However, the issue still persists.

Did anybody encounter a similar problem and has an idea how to solve it?

Thank you very much.

Wifi is very hard to determine cause of problem many times. It mostly is interference from outside your house.

Much less common is some issue with either the router or the wifi nic in your machine. You have few options other than to upgrade drivers and firmware. You could have bad hardware but there is no way to tell other than blinding replacing stuff and hoping to get lucky. BUT bad hardware is not real common cause of this issue so it may be a complete waste of money.

Really the only thing you can change is the radio channels. This used to be a way to fix this but there is so much wifi in use you can almost never find channels someone else is not using.

You could try to force your router to only use 20mhz channels...

You could try to force your router to only use 20mhz channels. This will drop your speed but may improve the stability of the connection.

Maybe pay all your neighbors to move away :)

I would consider powerline units. These tend to work well for most people and does not have the issue of interference from neighbors. Although they work well for most people they are dependent on the electrical wires in your house so be sure you can return them.

Solution
Hi guys,

thanks for your reply. The QoS I have deactivated (automated QoS for gaming etc.). One thing which might helped is the channels (thanks for that idea) as well as I am now trying 5ghz - most likely as my area is quite filled with wifi networks (more than 10).

The last few tests it worked much better (5k ping transmissions without loss) as well as the streaming is much smoother.
