I have a 12 year old asus RT-N16 router that has seemingly lost it's settings, or something of that order, twice in the last 24 hrs. No power events or network traumas that I know of. What happens is that I can no longer connect to it via wired connection or wifi. Twice I've done a reset and reconfigure and it comes back.
Is there anything else to conclude other than it's time to retire this unit?

If the router is acting/behaving weird, generally it's time for a firmware update(if there are any pending) or the router needs to be replaced.

That being said, have you checked to see that firmware updates aren't pending for the router?

Thanks Luftji, you provided the only reply to the other recent thread I have here at TH.
Its a very old router and as a result there haven't been any firmware updates for a long time. It does have the most recent from ASUS. I used to use 3rd party firmware on it but had to switch back to ASUS firmware about a year ago.
Sounds like I have to replace it.
