I’m planning to run a 1440p 144hz display. I know that the 2070 super is enough for that resolution on it’s own, but I’m gonna try to avoid upgrading for a long time after this. Probably at least five years. So I’m not sure if I would be better off going with the 2080 super for future proofing, mainly in aspects such as ray tracing. But again, I’m not sure if I should even bother with ray tracing at 1440p since the 2080 ti can’t even handle that well. What do you guys think?

Solution
Look at the 780 Ti vs. the 780. 5 years ago they were top of the line cards from Nvidia. Which one would you choose now? Probably neither. But 5 years ago getting the 780 was expensive, and 780 Ti was even more expensive. My vote would be the 2070 S. But then the RX 5700 XT is a much better value at that price point.
Here's my suggestion. Don't expect a card to last for 5 years at that resolution and at that frame rate. Get the cheapest card that can get the job done. Upgrade again in another 2 years. Trust me it will be better spent money. I wouldn't worry about ray tracing yet. Get a RX 5700 and be done with it for 2 years. Then upgrade again in another 2 years.

not even the 2080Ti will be enough for 1440p in 5 years

hmm I don't think you can even get 120fps in most recently released triple A titles

You will only get just over 100 fps with games like Shadow of the tomb raider (no RT of course)

way below 100fps in games like Assassins Creed Odyssey and Control

When you imply that it won’t last, do you mean that the card will fail? Or it’ll become irrelevant like older models? I’m planning to buy the gaming x trio model of whichever card I get, which probably has one of the best cooling systems of any GPU. So I’m expecting it to stay cool and last a long time, as long as the fans don’t fail. (From my understanding, cooler GPU’s last longer)

Good point. I don’t know much about the GPU timeline but I didn’t realize that those cards only came out 5 years ago. I’m just hoping that I can get some long term performance out of whichever card I buy. Soon I’m gonna need to start focusing on saving up for college, a car, and stuff of that sort, so I’m trying to go all out with my PC so I don’t have to worry about upgrading again for a while. The GTX 10 series seems to be fairly relevant after 3 years, so I’m hoping the current generation of GPU’s follows the same trend. As for what you said about the 5700 XT, I was debating between getting that card or the 2070 super for a while, and I ended up deciding on the 2070 super. Mainly because I love the gaming x trio card, and MSI doesn’t make that model for the 5700 XT unfortunately. I also don’t mind spending the extra money since I’m trying to go all out

I don’t really plan on playing any new triple A games at the moment. I still have a big library of games that I need to play. The only upcoming triple A game that I’m planning to play is doom eternal, which I’m sure will run fine if it’s anything like doom 2016. When it comes to really demanding games, I’ll be happy with an average of 60 FPS. I’m also planning to overclock this card heavily, so I’ll probably get better results than those benchmarks assuming the card isn’t overclocked
