Good evening fellas!

So I'm looking to replace my GTX 1080 and I was wondering which one of the above mentioned cards RX 5700 XT, 2070 Super and 2080 are strong enough to cover me in case I swap from 1080p @ 144 Hz to 240Hz (Guess none of the above mentioned) or 1440p @ 144 Hz.

Performance wise what is the difference between these three cards? I guess AMD offers better VFM over RTX but also is 2070 Super close to 2080's performance for that matter?

Kind regards

Solution
Depends on the specific title(s) in question.l

Generally speaking 2080 > 2070S > 5700XT
But in some titles, a 2070S is within a couple of % of a 2080... And, in a lot of instances, a 5700XT is within 5-10% of a 2070S' performance, sometimes even bettering it.

You're looking at ~$420 for a decent 5700XT, ~$500 for a 2070S and ~$600 for a 2080.

You could possibly make an argument for the 2070S over a 5700XT (~20% more money, and in some instances might net you 10% more performance), but the 2080 should be off the table IMO.

Personally, I'd opt for the 5700XT*

*That assumes you have a CPU that can keep up. At 1080p especially, the CPU will play a big factor for higher framerates. At 1440p, it lessens.

From a price/performance stand point the RX 5700XT is the best value as it is about 5% slower than 2070 Super and 7-10% slower than 2080, all while being $100-$150 cheaper. For absolute performance the 2080 wins, however, not even the 2080Ti can push 144FPS in most games at 1440p.

If you're trying to max all settings, true.

But, provided you're prepared to drop some settings here & there, any of the three cards mentioned should be able to net 144FPS at 1440p in most titles today.

In the few titles I play, I push ~144FPS at 1440p with a 1070... typically in the low-medium graphics range.

Very true I should have stated max settings when referencing the 2080Ti.

Good evening guys and thank you for joining the conversation! Well my CPU is i9-9900K paired with 1080 FTW2 by EVGA.

I don't care for maxing out settings. Mostly, I play FPS games like COD, PUBG and from times to times some League of Legends. So even a 5700XT or a 2070S would be an overkill but since I'm thinking to adapt to either 240Hz or 1440 @ 144Hz, I would love to know if it would make sense to change from 1080 to 5700XT / 2070S, I tend to like 2070S a bit more, I don't even care for the RTX feature since it's premature yet, imo.

I tend to like NVIDIA cards more than AMD as I currently own a RX 580 and a 1080 (Obviously there are huge differences perormance wise since they are of a different price range) .

Would 5700 XT require a UV? Cause I wouldn't like to UV any card personally as I find it confusing. :D

I'm going through the exact same upgrade, and to be honest if it wasn't for the fact that I HAVE to give my 1080 to another PC I would just be keeping it.

I have purchased 2 5700xt's, a 2080 super, and now a 2070 super, and they are all not really worth upgrading from the 1080 to be honest. I would wait till next gen.

That said if you really want to go through with it...

The 5700xt is the slowest, but performs quite well. Software is garbage right now, and there's some weird issues. I would have stayed with the Sapphire Nitro+ of all the cards I got....but the Sapphire and the AMD software was buggy, I had weird crashes, my start menu kept disappearing (man that was annoying), and I had issues with chrome. Basically it was great for gaming, but was super annoying.

The 2070 super is very marginally faster, and it's rock solid as you would expect from Nvidia. It's basically just peace of mind you're buying with this card as it performs very similar to the 5700xt, but has zero issues.

The 2080 super does beat them both out, but I couldn't justify the price premium for the relatively few frames I got.

None of them overclock particularly well....don't expect much more than 2-3 extra fps. Note these were all high end models.

Some benchmarks I got (all on ultra settings):

Gears 5:
5700xt 77.4 fps
2070 super 77.4 fps
2080 super 88.3 fps

Wildlands:
5700xt 55.06 fps
2070 super 57.64 fps
2080 super 62.01 fps

Borderlands 3:
5700xt 53.25 fps
2070 super 58.67 fps
2080 super 65.9 fps

Destiny 2 (approx):
5700xt 100 fps
2070 super 110 fps
2080 super 120 fps

For a frame of reference I did not benchmark my 1080 on all of these, but I did bench it on gears and it was at about 71 fps. Destiny always ran about 90 fps with it...
