[SOLVED] RTX 2080 Ti underperforming in Red Dead Redemption 2 and other games

Hey guys,

I purchased a MSI GeForce RTX 2080 Ti GAMING X TRIO - 11GB GDDR6 earlier this year, and I've noticed that my FPS in games hasn't really been all that impressive, and every game i play i get lower FPS than when people benchmark the same GPU in the same game at 1440p. Also i am often noticing things pop in and out for a split second in games, most often trees in the distance.

For example, in Red Dead Redemption 2 with everything on High and MSAA off i drop as low as 60 FPS, when i see people benchmark the card on YouTube with same settings, they get 85 FPS average, 25 FPS higher! that is absolutely crazy, what am i doing wrong?

My spec is;

MSI GeForce RTX 2080 Ti GAMING X TRIO - 11GB GDDR6
Intel Core i5-9600K
MSI MPG Z390 GAMING PRO CARBON AC
Corsair HX750i
Corsair Vengeance RGB PRO DDR4-3000 C15 BK DC - 16 GB
Samsung 970 EVO Plus SSD M.2 2280

I don't know what information to provide, if you want me to run a benchmark or something let me know.

Hope that someone can help me utilize this PC's full potential.

Thank you.

Simon

Your results are excellent. You are comparing different things on your own as well. The bechnmark video you saw, was with different drivers, windows updates, on a different system. Unless it is identical you can't compare without errors.

Even in the video I posted, you see a 9700k (8c/8t) compared to your 9600k (6c/6t). Those 2 extra cores DO make a difference.

Open HWmonitor while playing and MSI afterburner and keep your eyes to each individual core. If just one core goes to 95-100% utilisation you get bottlenecked.

It also happens in Modern Warfare where my FPS drops way below what it's supposed to, it's very odd.

That phrase "way below what it's supposed to" does not give any indication. Write the actual fps...
You mentioned that you drop as low as 60 fps. Is that the lowest and then it goes higher or is it the average? Because you also said that those videos showed 85 fps AVERAGE (that means it will get lower and higher than that). RDR2 is not very well optimised from what I am seeing constantly in these forums. How is the performance in other games?

To have better picture, you can do the following:
Run UserBenchmark and post the link to the results here.
Update to the latest BIOS, chipset drivers, windows updates, graphics drivers.
The GPU drivers are better to be updated following this guide:
How To - How to perform a CLEAN install of your video card drivers. | Tom's Hardware Forum

This video shows a 9700k with a 2080 ti @ 1440p and most of the time stays under 70fps.

Hey,

Yes, i forgot to mention he dropped to 75 FPS at lowest and 85 FPS average, i would say i average 68 FPS. The guy in the video you linked has mostly everything set to ultra, i have 50/50 high/medium.

UserBenchmarks: Game 147%, Desk 145%, Work 101%
CPU: Intel Core i5-9600K - 96.5%
GPU: Nvidia RTX 2080-Ti - 192.5%
SSD: Samsung 970 Evo Plus NVMe PCIe M.2 1TB - 303%
RAM: Corsair Vengeance RGB PRO DDR4 3200 C15 2x8GB - 99.4%
MBD: MSI MPG Z390 GAMING PRO CARBON AC (MS-7B17)

I will try to update my bios and perform a clean video driver install, as you can see in my results my GPU actually performs decent in benchmarks, it's once i open a game the issue comes up. It also happens in Modern Warfare where my FPS drops way below what it's supposed to, it's very odd.

Solution
Hi, so im running into the same issue - i recently assembled a fresh gaming system, and overall it performs amazing (in most games i get very good framerates), but for some reason i am unable to even hit 40FPS in RDR2 in 3440x1440 resolution. I have seen people benchmarking this game with almost identical or a bit worse system in the same resolution on ultra settings and get around 60-70 FPS, while on my system if i crank literally everything to ultra, including the advanced setting, im getting 20-24, but i am unable to get above 39-40 no matter what graphics settings i use (the GPU is at 100% at utilisation all times according to Afterburner).

What worries me a lot is that if i run User Benchmark it just fails the GPU tests and says that it aborts further testing the GPU so i get totally zero benchmark readings in UserBenchmark, cant provide any (rest of the scores are around the 75th-80th percentile)

My system specs:
CPU: i9-9900k @5.0Ghz
Cooler: NZXT Kraken X62
RAM: G.Skill Trident Z Neo 32GB @3600Mhz CL16
Mobo: Gigabyte Z390 Aorus Master
GPU: Zotac RTX 2080Ti Amp
PSU: Seasonic Prime Platinum 850W
Boot & Game Drives: 2x Samsung 970Evo Plus 1TB

Quick Edit: Turns out my Afterburner with RTSS were crashing the UB test. I completed it succesfully now, and here are my results: SunnyBoy test run

I think the results are pretty outstanding, my GPU is at 192%, 91st percentile. The 9% are probably some extreme overclockers, so my GPU runs better than it should, given that it's a mid-range 2080Ti, not an MSI Lightning or something. Then its even more weird for me that im getting such low framerates in RDR2, and nothing else!
