Hi guys, i bought from ebay a RTX 3070 Gainward Phantom GS for a very very good deal.
Card is used for a few months and should have warrantly left. I tested it in some lite games in 1080p 60hz (i need to switch monitor) and was fine. When the card reaches 80/90% utilization temps spikes to 80/82° C and starts to throttling, core keeps going to 1900mhz to 1600, it spikes up and down a lot.
I have in a Panteks case with 3 120 intake and 3 exhaust, my 10700k aircooled barely hits 60°c when gaming.
Currently running 1800@825mv with 60hz screen with no problems, but i wanna use the full potential.
Card was probably used for mining, temps spikes up like instantly with no undervolt.
Can anyone guiding me with disassembly and repaste? (disassembly operations, pads thickness, best thermal paste etc.)

First of all 1600MHz is not throttling.
Second: put power and temp limits to the max. And I'm pretty sure that 825mV is not going to be enough.
And third: What fan curve are you using?

Those are my settings in Afterburner for my 3070Ti. For my card, everything lower than those voltages is not enough.

This it the fan curve https://ibb.co/rHYKHkH
Forgot to say tha is the "GS" model.
Any settings after max power and temp limits?
It crashes in kombustor, but not crashing in games (Far cry 6, elden ring, Warzone)

No other settings.
Can you tell us what is your full pc specs?
If it crashes even in one app, then the GPU is not stable.
Give it a bit more voltage. But you will get a bit hotter.

You can repaste it. I had a similar issue with mine and the new paste dropped the temps about 10C (mine is water cooled)

It's a 3 year old card. Mining died out the better part of a year ago although it wasn't fully dead for a bit after that, stupid stragglers.

So at most it saw mining for 2 years, if at all, which being a 3070 is doubtful.

At 3 years old, or less, the chances of it needing a repaste are very slim, the most likely scenario is the prior owner upgraded to a 40 series.

All 30 series are well known for running warm and spiking temps, especially considering that you are pushing the card to 80-90% usage which is Very odd behavior for 1080p/60Hz since a 3070 is a strong 1440p / light 4k player.

Boost clock on that card is 1815MHz, so 1600-1900 isn't out of the realm of possibility depending on what gpu boost 3 does, power targets, temps etc.

The fact that suggest me that repaste is needed is that temps spikes like instant when trying to stress test, wich is strange with a 2.5 slots triple fan cooler.
1080p 60 stays very cool 40/50° with low usage, but when i will upgrade monitor ill probably have issues.

Anyway i found out that my card is very similar (i think identical) to Palit 3070 Gamerock, back of the pcb is identical, so teardown seems pretty easy....
Just need some advice in Pads Thickness, and for thermal cumpound i was thinking to go with Kryonaut or NH2 from Noctua.

Trow in some MX4 that i had in house. Idle temp from 30-32° to 20-25°, used your curve (2010mhz @956mv), never goes above 62° no crash in kombustor and Heaven.

Hope scores are in line, card stay 1995 to 2025 mhz. https://ibb.co/MPSD10Q
