[SOLVED] RTX 3080 PSU Question

Hello, i am planning to buy an RTX 3080 when they will be available. I will probably use the GPU to two different computers with Corsair TX650M Gold (2017) , EVGA 650W GQ Gold (i already have them the corsair for 1 year and the evga for 2). I use a 65W Ryzen 7 3700X , 2x16GB DDR4 3600mhz , 1 SSD , 1 NVME and 1HDD. Nvidia suggests 750W but as i read they stated that the recommendation is based with an i9 10900K that draws 200+ Watts. Would be better if you can get a bigger PSU to make sure they can provide a good power stability.

750W PSU is recommended for RTX 3080 and 650W PSU for RTX 3070 by Nvidia official site.

Would be better if you can get a bigger PSU to make sure they can provide a good power stability.

As the OP mentions that recommendation is with a 10900k. They also state

“2 - Requirement is made based on PC configured with an Intel Core i9-10900K processor. A lower power rating may work depending on system configuration.”

I was watching a review yesterday where they were running a Corsair SF600, 3080 and 10900k at stock and they claimed no issues. Now I wouldn’t recommend that but seeing as you have a cpu that even with PBO peaks around 130w and the 10900K can briefly peak at >250w I can see how a high quality 650w would work.

Let’s say
400w for 3080
130w for cpu
50w for everything else

This comes out at 580w. So approximately still >20% headroom left.

If I was buying a new psu I’d go 750w but I can how a high quality 650w should work.

My CPU based on Ryzen master draws at 100% total 88W. I dont have PBO enabled and i really dont care about overclocking. I already have the 2 PSU's and to buy 2 new good 750W quality PSU's from seasonic or superflower will cost me around 220‎€ so thats not an option. I guess i will wait until RTX 3070 benchmarks and big navi and if the RTX 3080 is still the best option for the price i will risk it.

If you don’t run PBO then you have by my guess over 100w headroom with a 650w psu and that is using my overestimate for gpu and everything else. I’d say you are fine with the good quality 650w psu’s you have.

So i finally managed to get a Gigabyte RTX 3080 Gaming OC. At full load the card draws 360W. I used the TX650M because it has 2 more years warranty than the EVGA. Everything works fine.
