News RTX 5090 laptop review claims GPU is a performance dud, but outshines the 4090 in power efficiency

The point of the 5090 laptop is that its much more efficient than the 4090, so you can put it in thinner & lighter devices.

Even with this increase in efficiency, you'll still never game on battery, BUT for doing actual work, where the GPU isn't red lining the entire time, its now possible on battery.

I work daily on a macbook, and its still frustrating how much more efficient Apple Silicon is. The m4 max GPU draws 45 watts at most and performs almost at laptop 4090 levels, 175 watts. The 5090 laptop is probably doing 130 watts for this same output (blender)

I wonder what the results would be like if they used latest AMD CPU with 3D Cache. I mean, Inte's 14's gen was released in 2023, and it's previous gen now.
 
I have the Alienware 16 Area-51 AA16250 with the 5090. The laptop is a damn near 400W laptop. That said? It's just shy of my RTX 4080 desktop at 4K and 1800P gaming, which is exactly where I expected it would land, based on the specs. Who knows? Maybe the drivers will age well. I know AMD ones do. They're weird like that. I remember running games like AC Valhalla on my 6900XT and getting between 67-80FPS at 3840x1440 ultrawide. Then, around the time 7000 series release, I was running up to 107FPS on the same Pc, same OS install, same game...you just have to wait around a couple years for AMDs to do well. It was the same for my Vega64 (supposed 1080 killer at release). At launch it was anything but. 2 years later it was virtually on par a 1080, which I also had around that time and had gotten for free at work. Back then I was using AC Origins as my return to game to compare off of.

Actually that was the quite amazing thing, considering the times. Everything I was looking at on Newegg for even so much as a 5070 or 5080 was going for 3-4K. Alienware was (and may still be) selling the 5090 version for 3800. The 5080, as I recall, was 3200. And that wasn't even the biggest reason why I went for them. It was because it was one of the highest wattage GPUs I could find out there in a laptop. Plus? it was more reasonable in price and with an excellent display in build quality versus what I was finding from companies like MSI and ASUS, and the prices I was getting from them, some of which went up to 5, 000 but with much cheaper displays and flimsier construction and lower wattage...but that would probably be the fine work of the tariffs and Dell being an American company and the others being overseas. So in the end I was getting a still higher price but more bang for the buck. In normal times they probably would have paid $3, 100 for it. So it wasn't too far off the mark.
