Hello,
I have posted this topic in different subforum, but I think that this one is more appropriate (sorry for that)
TLDR: Low performance on RTX2070 with low GPU usage, but when using additional GPU loading software like MSI Kombustor – I get excellent performance and FPS.
Sorry for the wall of text, but I am trying to give you enough information.
Recently I have changed my GPU from GTX970 to RTX2070 expecting much higher fps in games.
My current setup is:
I know that my CPU and RAM is supposed to be a bottleneck, but my funds are limited and I plan to upgrage it in some time (up to 1 year I think)
The problem is that basically when playing games in 1440P I get quite low fps:
Smite – around 50-60 with drops to 20-30 (med-high)
TW:Warhammer in battles 20-30 (high)
Witcher 3 – 20-30 (ultra)
And the GPU usage is around 20-30 % only, but my CPU usage overall (50%) and for specific cores is between (30%-80%).
There have been similar threads about GPU usage so I know about the CPU may be a bottleneck, even though it is also not showing full usage for CPU. But I have done some testing and here is a strange part:
When I put some additional load for GPU like MSI afterburner Kombustor in background, my GPU usage is higher – while gaming between 50 – 80% AND magically my FPS in games increase like crazy – in SMITE I can play Ultra with 140-150FPS with no drops, TW:W 90-100 FPS (high) and witcher3 around 60-80 on ultra. If I stop the Kombustor by closing the application, my fps starts to drop with the GPU usage falling as well.
So the conclusion is that when I load the GPU additionally, I get nice gaming experience with great quality and great FPS, but when the GPU is left for game on its own – it just sucks as the FPS is low and I have poor performance. This also means that my current CPU and RAM can definatelly supply enough frames for the GPU!
I have upgraded my GPU driver using DDS, today after work I will upgrade my mobo BIOS, see if it changes anything.
Can someone explain why does it work like that, and how can it be possibly fixed?
