My motherboard supports only 333Mhz FSB.

I am looking to buy a Barton 3200+ 400Mhz FSB (only Socket A CPU I can find). Can I run it at 333Mhz FSB? Instead of running at 2200, it will be running at about 1800? And this will make it a 2600+ equivalent?

Is there a way to increase the multiplier to bring it closer to the 2200 Mhz clock speed it was supposed to run at?

you might be able to OC it to 400fsb.

Are you very limited in funds that you can only upgrade your cpu to a AXP 3200+?

Because depending on what you have, you could get a cheap A64 bundle of a cpu and mobo and you will have a better system.

just throwin out options that might work

I have an AGP Radeon 9700Pro I dont want to throw out.

Lets say the Barton 3200+ = R1000 (R being currency)

A64 3200+ & MB = R2500. 6600GT PCIE= R1500.
Total = R4000

I will probably go 64 bit next year sometime. I just want something better than my Palomino 2000+ to keep me going till then.

honestly if you got a better gpu....something like a 6600GT you would get more playable settings then a faster cpu core.

there are limits, you can't put a top end gpu like a 7800GTX or a X1800XT with a Celeron....
Well you could, but that would make baby jesus cry.

Check for the availability of a Athlon XP-M 2500+, it is multiplier unlocked and meant to run at 1866MHz (14 x 133) on low (1.4V) Voltage.

All of those features make it a wonderfull overclocker, set the FSB to 166MHz, bump the voltage a bit and you will get a nice 2333MHz CPU.

What motherboard do you have? if it's nforce2-based then you're in with a chance of overclocking your FSB up to 200(or near), but anything VIA that's stuck at 333 isn't going to cut it.

I agree with most points in here really.. You'll get a bigger gaming boost by upgrading the gfx, but then you'll have a more limited choice of mobos later because you'll be limited to AGP.

What CPU do you have? It would have to be a pretty underpowered one for you to really benifit that much from that upgrade.

If you really have no choice, then go for the mobile XP, as stated above, but better to get a new mobo + A64 really. you could get an Nforce3 AGP board (I have one) and use your 9700 in it. Although you wouldn't be able to upgrade the gfx beyond a 6800 Class card, as the newest gen is PCI-E only.

I currently have a Palomino 2000+. 266Mhz FSB. Running on a Gigabyte board with a VIA KT400 chipset.
For some games, the 9700Pro comes pretty close to the 6600GT, although in others (Doom3) there is quite a big gap.

Getting a new AGP board is quite useless imo. Then I will have to upgrade it again for a new GFX card.

There are only 2 CPU's I can get. Barton 3200+ (400 FSB - secondhand), or a Semperon 2800+ (333 FSB - new).

Most local computer stores staff looks very confused when you mention Socket A, trying their best to figure out if I mean 939 or 754.

I am basically waiting to see how this M2 socket plays out before I upgrade to 64 bit.

Newegg has a 754 3700+ with free nforce3 250 mobo for $205.

U wont get a better bang for your buck than this and it will definatly spark some life into the ol 9700pro.

What exactly do you wish to improve? You won't really get that much improvement from the upgrade you propose, especially if your RAM isn't rated to PC2700 (333DDR). on the old socket A systems running RAM and FSB asynchronously would often result in a performance drop.

You may get a small boost in some CPU-intensive games, but on the whole it wouldn't really be worthwhile.

Am I correct in assuming you're in South Africa then? (R being Rand, and the prices you quote sound like it)

Assuming he is... All you other guys... Newegg is cheap to a european, but quite depressingly so for a South African. An A64 3200+ is around R1,900 (did a very quick look), which is ~US$290... So telling him about cheap newegg deals is not going to make him feel better

Just had a quick look, and some SA company called Retromod (based in durban) Have a Sempron 2800+ (2Ghz) Going for R642.87, according to their Sept. pricelist. No idea what their shipping's like, or even if they are reliable or anything. They seem waaay cheaper than the other few websites I just browsed through though. They have a socket 754 A64 3000+ for R1237.40.

Uli make a chipset that fully supports both AGP 8x and PCI-Express. If you could get a board based on that, you could replace the CPU and motherboard, and keep your AGP card until you later get a PCI-E one... That would be the most cost-effective option I think, but those boards are relatively rare here in europe, and I have no idea about them down there.

incidentally, if you're from somewhere else, then please ignore my ramblings... 😳

I made peace with the inflated prices we pay a long time ago... sort of.
2 years ago I paid (at todays exchange rate) $358 for "cheap" "great deal" $150 RRP speakers. DIRECTLY FROM THE IMPORTERS! (At the time our exchange rate was crap).
Most people serious about computers know someone who knows someone who allows them to buy directly from the importers. I wouldnt be surprised to see a GF FX 5600 for around $150 at the largest computer store chain around here.

Anyhow, enough about that.

I have 512 MB 333Mhz Ram at the moment, looking to buy some more soon.

What I want is to play Quake 4 at anything but the absolute lowest, with framerates never dropping below 30fps. Same goes for FEAR.
You realy need shadows for the atmosphere in those games.

Otherwise I will just have to keep those games on the shelf until I can afford a whole new system.

Oh, and my current PC was a secondhand. I would definitely have gotten a nForce 2 and a Thorougbred if I bought it new.

Well, FEAR needed fairly low settings on my buddy's P4 3.4Ghz /9800Pro/1Gb system... So Although you may get some improvement, I don't think you'd really notice enough difference to justify the cost.. 5FPS max probably.

another 512Mb of RAM would probably make a larger difference actually. If you buy DDR400 then you'd be able to use it with an A64 at a later date (unless you do end up going with M2, which'll need DDR2 of course) it would almost certainly help FEAR more than ~350Mhz extra CPU power anyway.

I can get a Semperon 2800+ for about the same price close to where I live, but acording to the CPU charts, the a Barton 2600+ is quite a bit faster.

If I could get a 3000+ Barton, I feel I would be set for a while, as the perfomance is not that far below an entry level A64. Dont know if anyting lower than that is worth it.

A buddy of mine got a 6600GT, 512MB 2400+ Thoroughbred on a KT400. Fear autodetected most of the settings on high.

In some benchmarks the 9700Pro scores very close to the 6600GT. I was hoping some more CPU would give me the speed I need.

Maybe I should just get a new hobby... or a higher paying job 😛

Thanks for all the replies.

You can always sell your soul to Satan.

Though right now if you could manage to set up even a very stock-limited Xbox 360 import business I bet you'd have more than enough for a good PC upgrade. Man I wish I'd thought to struggle with crowds to get a box or two and then eBay them.
