Easy. The 12v rail on your Power supply is the thing that gives the power. The 8-pin connect spreads the amps over the pins better than a 6-pin connector, but you can safely use a 6-pin to 8-pin adapter if needed.
Some video cards will even run with jsut the 6-pin plugged in. You can try this if you want, it won't hurt your card. It's like using a 4-pin MB CPU power cable in a 4/8 MB CPU power socket. (some cards check for connectivity on these pins, some don't.)
