So I'm ready to upgrade to a better cpu and I was looking around for the best lga775 cpu for a reasonable price. I was able to find an unused Xeon x3220 for $40, so I got it and it just came in today. I've been trying to update my bios, so I downloaded the executable express update for my motherboard off of the intel support site. I ran it and said yes to the EULA, and immediately after I received an error message stating, "This program is unable to continue. The BIOS you are trying to update to is invalid for your system." I'm assuming that this means I'm trying to update with the wrong file, but everything I've looked over would suggest otherwise.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

thank you Phil. I have been to the site before, but my motherboard is a DG965OT.
It isn't listed in the cpuid list, so I don't really know what to do with that.
Could there be something that I'm overlooking that is completely throwing this off?

My bad, I didn't check the list. As it says, if your specific board isn't listed it's probably a custom-made OEM board as fitted by computer manufacturers. In that case Intel advises that you contact the relevant computer manufacturer.

My guess is that the BIOS update is not compatible with your OEM board. Where factory-built computers are concerned, only the computer manufacturer has compatible BIOS updates for the simple reason that the board was custom-made for them.

BIOS updates from Intel are only suitable for retail Intel boards supplied direct to the public for DIY computer building, or supplied to shop-based local computer builders.
