I recently built a new gaming computer,

Basics ---

CPU - Intel Core i7 4790K Unlocked Quad Core HT 4GHZ/4.4GHZ Processor LGA1150 Haswell 8MB Cache Retail

MB - GIGABYTE Z97-HD3P ATX LGA1150 Z97 DDR3 SATA3 GBLAN PCI-E16 2PCI-E1 Xfire USB3 HDMI Motherboard

RAM - G.SKILL Tridentx F3-2400C10D-16GTX 16GB 2X8GB DDR3-2400 CL10 240PIN 1.65V Dual Channel Memory Kit

GPU - ASUS GeForce GTX 970 Strix OC 1253MHZ 4GB 7.0GHZ GDDR5 2xDVI HDMI DisplayPort PCI-E Video Card
----------------------------------------

Ive been reading up on the 2400mhz ram and see that it requires an over clock, could someone possibly send me in the right direction and let me know what the max speed I can set it to?

Solution
In the BIOS there is a setting to activate XMP, and what that does is tell the BIOS to read some stored memory on how it should setup the system to use the memory sticks at their best settings. All you have to do is find the setting, turn it on, save the BIOS, and let the machine restart. The memory will then come up at 2400 speed after that.
Check in the bios to see its running clock. There is a automatic setting to clock it at 2400 if it is not already clocked at 2400.

Also for gaming I would pick a GTX 980 + i5-4690k over a i7-4790k + GTX 970.

Only get the i7 combo if you are going to do a lot of video editing.

I do a lot of video editing so I went with the i7-4790k and the gtx 9704gb and will eventually upgrade my GPU to a 980/titan when I'm not so poor from this build. My board has a preset of 1600mhz and its 2400mhz compatible so should I be good to bump it right up to 2400mhz?

A little late for hardware recommendations.

Intel X.M.P profiles in the BIOS. Should be able to set it and it will know what to do. Generally it is above 2400 that you have to actually start overclocking things to get the rated speeds.

Given that it is 1.65 volt memory, you may not be able to run it at 2400Mhz without some voltage tweaking (1.65 volts is already over Intel's specs) But the profiles should offer multiple speeds if 2400 doesn't work.

If that fails. Hit up Tradesman1 with a PM, he is our resident G.Skill expert.

I can do 2100 without any tweaking, but I bought it prepared, knowing I would have to in order to get it up to the full 2400mhz, I just don't know what to set it to, cant find anything online
