[SOLVED] Running 3600 at 3200 timing?

Hey all.

I'm going to be upgrading my PC soon to a Ryzen 5 5600. I'm thinking of pairing it with an ASRock B450 Steel Legend mobo and 2x16gb dimms of G.Skill Trident Z Neo 3600. I was going for the 3200 rated RAM but for this particular model it seems 3600 is more common and affordable than the rarer 3200 modules.

Would I run into any issues by running these 3600 dimms at 3200 in XMP? The motherboard supports Vermeer at 3200 and the chip as well supports 3200. If the RAM is never told to go to 3600 then it shouldn't be a problem having a little extra right? Let me know if I'm overlooking anything, thank you!

Are you asking if XMP profiles are dangerous?

My B350 mainboard paired with R5 1600 & 3200 LPX RAM runs @ Profile 1 almost 3000 MHz, even though my mainboard or CPU doesn't support that (max was 2400 I think, thus it auto defaults to 2100MHz without XMP)

No I'm not asking if the profile is dangerous, but that does answer my question! If your board maxes at 2400 but you have a 3200 stick inside running at 2100 then it seems to be fine. I was worried if I have a 3600MHz dimm running at 3200MHz, there might be some compatibility, stability or timing issues but it doesn't seem that's the case. I just wanted to be sure before I spend the money 😁

I don't think there would be any issues.

My sticks defaulted down to 2100 because the board can't handle 3200 MHz with that Zen1 Cpu.
After activating XMP1 I got it running at 2999something MHz. So you will end up running at close to max speeds anyway regardless what your board says so no worries.

XMP p1 is safe OC
XMP p2 is aggressive, maybe unstable, OC.
