Running a 144hz Monitor But Only Getting 60Hz

I just reset my pc and installed windows 7, im having trouble installing updates my 144hz monitor is running at 60hz, however it says its at 144hz on Nvidia experience.

Nvidia Geforce Experience will only tell you the hardware installed, not what its currently running at. You need to go into Nvidia Control Panel and change it in there.

Tested and its 60hz

on the nvidia control panel it says that its 144hz however after taking the vsync test it says 60hz.

Which cable did you use to hook up to your monitor? I know I had to use DVI-D to get 144hz, when I tried HDMI it was only 60hz (both were @1080P).

using DP, was using it before i reset my pc and it was working at 144hz

++ Update, I Opened up a game and my screen blacked out then it suddenly started working at 144hz...

set it to 120max, else it'll run at full 3d clocks whilst in desktop. It might have been forcing a lower power state.
