Running a laptop 24/7 as a desktop replacement

Will running an Alienware 15 R3 24/7 as a desktop replacement shorten the life? Assume the laptop is left off to the side with the lid closed or partially closed.

get a dock for it if is available, it will configure it for most air flow underneath it, if not then get a nice usb fan system to sit your laptop on.
