Running dual monitors

I'm sure this is a simple question but I need your help for the answer.
I would like to have dual monitors on a newer Lenovo Desktop. It's running a NVIDIA GeForce GT 730 graphics card and Windows 10. It has a single VGA port along with an HDMI port. What would be the best route for dual monitors? The monitors I have are both Dell, U2311Hb and 1907FP. I'm a little lost. I've tried running one monitor off each port. One with a VGA and one with a DisplayPort to HDMI cable with no success. I can't get the desktop to recognize a second monitor no matter what. When I hook up the U23H11b with a VGA my computer won't allow me to adjust the resolution at all. It recognizes the monitor as a Generic PnP monitor.
I'm hoping this is an easy fix. I'm not against getting a new graphics card. I'll be using this for basic photoshop, spreadsheets, and office work. Not really a gamer but do watch movies and such.
Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

does connecting a single monitor via HDMI work?
if you are looking for extended desktop you can try using the HDMI for one monitor and your integrated graphics for your VGA monitor (the output on you motherboard not the graphics card)

I tried that already. For some reason(probably a mistake of my own), the HDMI output on my graphics card doesn't seem to be sending a signal. I've tried shutting everything down and restarting with just the HDMI hooked up. I've updated drivers with no effect either. Is there something I'm doing wrong there?

Probably just sending the wrong resolution for HDMI. Make sure it's sending 720p, 1080p, or 1360x768

Thanks for all the replies. Turns out I tired to think too much before trying simple things. After all the trying and everything it came down to me being a noob. HDMI to DVI converter instead of trying to go from hdmi to DisplayPort. Once again, thanks.
