Running ethernet cable underground between house and outbuilding

Hello,
I have read that you cannot run cat5 ethernet cable underground betwen two buildings because of a ground differential. If this is so, does this also apply to cat6 cable?

You can get special ethernet cable for outdoor use, but even regular cable will work, you'd want to run them inside a pipe though. http://compnetworking.about.com/cs/cablingcat5/f/cat5outdoors.htm

I'd recommend running it through conduit just to keep pesky critters from trying to chew through the wires.
