Running SLI with two different PCI-E slots

Can I run SLI with two gtx 560s with one being in a pci-e x16 slot and one being in a pci-8 x8 slot?

You can, but this would cause the 16x to down clock to 8x speed. Then again, it's something you wouldn't even notice with 560's.

I am torn between the SLI 560's vs getting an APU specifically the AMD A8 9700. Which do you think would be better?

If you already own the 560's you may as well stick with them. Otherwise if it's a purchase you plan on doing, then perhaps look for something else.
