Hello, everyone.

I'm trying to decide between 3 graphic cards. 1060 3gb, but I don't know only 3gb of vram is worth, and the two models of the rx 470, 4gb and 8gb. I'm gonna have to use a 900p monitor, however, I want to upgrade to a 1080p. Anyway, the 8gb version costs a little more and I don't know if it's worth it. There is the future proofing thing, but with the rx 470, which is a mid to high end card, will make a lot of difference. What do you think? I'm not considering the 480 because it's more expensive and very little different in performance compared to the 470.

Solution
an overclocked RX 470 with 8gb can perform almost as well as a 480, some games do require more than 4gb to use all details, if you're going 1080p the 8gb 470 is your beat route.

Thank you, Rogue. Do you think that only 3gb of the 1060 can become a problem? I heard some people saying that 8gb is too much for the 470 and has almost no difference. What you think?

3gb can be a limiting factor for some games, there are already many games that can use 4gb maxed at 1080p, and some that use more.

Doom for example requires more than 4gb for all details at 1080p. Anyone who tells you that doesn't know what they are talking about.

If you look at benchmarks, by the time the 8GB cards start pulling significantly ahead of 4GB cards, even the 8GB cards are already struggling anyway. The same is generally true between the 3GB and 6GB GTX1060 or even the 2GB vs 4GB RX460.

Most of the time, the GPUs run out of compute power before genuinely running out of memory.

I agree to a point. Its not going to make or break your game experience, but in the same respect if the price differences aren't huge, its worth it to get as much as you can.

Yes, I get that. Is about the limitation, not only holding new games better. To even be able to turn on nightmare option you need 5gb. But when I check the guru3d or other reliable benchmarks, the 1060 3gb has an overall perfomance better than 470 (both versions), 970.

Depends on the game. But the 1060 can perform better than the 470 especially in DX11.

The 470 can be overclocked to better levels, close to the 480 , so in that respect with 8gb you will get your best results. But out of the box, the 1060 I agree is likely fastest.

So you would recomend the 470 in long terms? The 4gb version and the 1060 3gb are pratically de same price here.

If you're willing to put in the effort to overclock it and have good case cooling yes, because eventually that extra memory (in the 8gb) may become more important.

If you're deciding between the 1060 3gb and the 470 4gb Id probably go 1060, the extra gb doesn't make much difference and out of the box the 1060 is faster.

Thank you for posting another comment so that one doesn't get huge haha. So thank you, between those two the 1060 is more worth it. I don't know about overclocking yet. I was just thinking about the extra vram for future games. In this case, me not being an overclock fan, still go for the 8gb?

That is unfortunate, the 1060 3gb performs equal and is supposed to be priced against the 480 4gb, not the 470. While my opinion is that the 480 4gb is the better option over the 1060 3gb, if they are priced differently (1060 3gb much cheaper), then the 1060 3gb is better.

If you're not into overclocking it get the 1060 hands down. Its faster and you won't miss that much with less vram.

It is tempting, of course. But I still worry about being limited in some games, as you said. There even some where the 1060 3gb suffers from limitation and those with 4gb of vram don't.

I don't which one I'm going to buy yet, but it's not unfortunate for me haha. If I decide to go with the 1060 it's indeed the same price as the 4gb 470 and it equals to the 480.

I meant unfortunate in that the 470 and 480 4gb are overpriced. As Rogue Leader said, the 1060 3gb is your best bet in this scenario. The 480 4gb should be comparably priced to the 1060 3gb.

But, yeah, it's a good value for you. 480 performance for the price of the 470.

Ok, man. If you can asure to me that I won't have any problems running future games with settings around high in 1080p, I will go for the 1060.
