both of them are used
i will pair them with ryzen 5 3600
in the beginning i was going for the rx 480, however it seems like amd has got some series issues with their drivers regarding older games on windows and it looks like amd has got no intention to fix them in the foreseeable future.
i can pay about 30$ more and get the gtx 970 , so which one should i go for?
thanks in advance

The 480 8gb is a better option.

The 970 only really has 3.5gb of usable vram (this ended in a lawsuit) and the 480 has 8gb.

Also, most non-reference 480s can be overclocked to the speed of a 580 easily outperforming a 970 by a fair margin.

I have played games 2000s games like half-life 2, team fortress 2, and doom 3 on my 480 with no issues. I dont see any driver-related issues.

thnaks for your reply,

it seems like the problem is very low performance related to games using dx9/opengl , specifcally opengl.
