RX 480 90 Degrees Blackout

Hello pals! I purchased a new ASUS STRIX RX 480 8GB and have been experiencing several freezes and black screens while playing some games especially, 'The Division'. I have pushed the settings to all pure Ultra and after some time, the whole PC gets hard freezes and my GPU's fans started to spin too fast such that I need to force reboot my PC! So, I have monitored the temperatures with MSI Afterburner and finally noticed that when my GPU reaches around 90 degrees Celsius, it crashes. Also, I have adjusted and took some time with AMD's Global WattMan settings thinking that there maybe some limits. This kind of problem exists for many people, not only me. Please watch this video (The same issue like me in the video): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vaxJHaR0Gng&list=LLuA9MPnkiCooZ2ENMDZD8kA&index=1

So, why does my PC crash when it reaches 90 degrees Celsius? Do the companies force the GPUs to crash after the specific temperature reaching? Or is this the kind of thermal throttling? Please explain, I would be really thankful.

By the way, I didn't overclock my PC at all. I just don't want to overclock and running my PC full at stock speeds. And I ran Stress Test using 'FurMark' whole night and noticed my PC didn't crash when the temperatures were around 84 degrees Celsius (The temperature reading, I saw, after Stress Test which is maximum). All the default settings in Driver Settings too.

The problem is the card never should reach 90°C. I own the same card (ASUS ROG STRIX RX 480 O8GB) and the card never go higher than 60°c.

Did you try using MSI Afterburner to control your temperatures in game or get a good FAN performance vs temperature?

sounds like a possible RMA. like said above the card should never get that hot. it sounds like a botched factory thermal paste application. either that or you have some kind of corrupt bios that isn't properly throttling the core frequency and/or isn't correctly controlling the fans.

No, I have not adjusted the fan speeds. I'll try from now on, keeping the temperatures safe. :) So, there is no problem with my card? How do your card never go higher than 60°c?

No, I think it's not the Motherboard and I've kept my Motherboard BIOS up to date. All the components are brand new. Maybe, I need to maintain the temperatures using software from reaching 90°c.

I have the mania to now play any game with Afterburned on and looking at the temperatures each time on the screen, and it never reached 60°c.

Again, something is not right. By default, the card should have the system to start the fans to work at 50~52°c. If you still have troubles, random shutdown, start to think in a RMA.

But, before talking about that, what is your whole system?

RMA means return merchandise authorization, not motherboard. im talking about your graphics cards bios and thermal paste on its cooler. you shouldn't need to maintain anything, the card should throttle itself as it has multiple fail safes like core frequency throttling, ramping up fan speed, or dropping to a lower power state that apparently are not working except when it hits its 90-92c shutdown protection. i really think its the thermal paste, like not even applied maybe. either that or one of the fans is dead.

My PC Specifications:
CPU - Intel Core i5-6500 3.20 GHz
Motherboard - ASUS MAXIMUS VIII RANGER
CPU Cooler - Cooler Master Hyper 103
Graphics Card - RX 480 STRIX 8GB
RAM - Kingston HyperX Fury 16GB (8x2) 2133 MHz
Hard Disk - WD Caviar Blue 1TB 7200 RPM
PSU - Corsair VS650 650W
Case Fans Installed - 2xFront (Intake), Rear and Topx2 (Exhaust)

CPU temperatures are good but the Graphics Card. Yes, the fans of my GPU starts spinning when reaching around 45-50°c. Anyway, I will keep any eye on the fans and temps. Thank you.

The temperatures when being idle are about 38°c which were monitored on Afterburner, and maximum of 84°c when in workloads. I 'think and hope' there are no thermal paste problems and GPU BIOS problems because the temps are normally good. The fans are spinning fine. Once, I tested my GPU pushing the 'Power Limit' option to 50% all the way up in Driver Settings and noticed the crashes when around 90°c. I'll test for some time and will make a decision for replacement. Thank you.

One final question, :p Do the GPU automatically shut-down when reaches 90 degrees Celsius? So, it's normal as it is designed to be right?

I think not, it shouldn't. Try using MSI Afterburner insted of Wattman for the FAN controller! In fact, try using ASUS TweakII utility!

the gpu should start throttling its clocks somewhere in the 78-84c range... the specific number is whatever asus decided on. you can see the throttle temp in msi afterburner.
Temp.jpg

the card will then further go into auto shutdown at a higher temp, 89-94c or again whatever asus decided on. this temperature cannot be overridden on the stock bios. the fact that even after hitting the throttle temp the core continues to rise in temperature tells me something is very wrong. it should maintain throttle temp quite easy even with restricted airflow.

As we know AMD cards runs hotter, I still pushed up the Power Limiter to 50% in 'Global WattMan' and didn't cared the temperatures. That made my card boost to high temperatures and thus making crashes. I didn't know why it crashed even when I didn't touched the default settings in drivers at the time I purchased my GPU and playing games. :p (Maybe the temps were high).
