I've recently bought a rx 480 nitro+ , but been having worse performance and stuttering than with my last card. I think this is down to my motherboard and cpu , I've done the usual uninstall the drivers and reinstall. The specs for my pc are currently ,

Processor: AMD FX-6300 3.50GHz (4.10GHz Turbo) 6x Core CPU

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-970A-UD3P ATX Motherboard

Graphics: Sapphire NITRO+ RX480 8GB AMD Graphics Card 1306MHz

Corsair 650 Watt VS650 Standard ATX PSU/Power

Anyone got any ideas which motherboard and cpu I should upgrade to stop, this bottlenecking?

Solution
Did you install your drivers correctly? See if you can test the graphics card on another computer to see if it's your CPU that is bottlenecking that CPU. The FX-6300 works great with my RX 470, so just verify everything before jumping to conclusions.

1. Check all your connections with 6 pin connectors to the connections on your motherboard.
2. Reinstall drivers, maybe try some older versions of Crimson.
3. Try to test the graphics card on another computer.
4. See how much workload that the graphics card is pushing out when you are playing games.

I think your CPU will bring back the performance of your card a little bit, but won't bottleneck completely. Good luck!

your cpu isnt good enough for a 480 yes

what are your problems exactly? stuttering can have many causes

Stuttering meaning fps going from 100 to 30 , most of time in some games , have you got any suggestions on a new motherboard and cpu ?

With a 480, I would honestly suggest to wait for the New Ryzen chips releasing in 2 weeks, but if you really needed it, get a Z170 or Z270 with any i5, will keep you good for another good 4-5 years.

Would a Intel Core Skylake Processor i5-6500/3.2 GHz Processor CPU work with a MSI Z170 A Tomahawk ATX and Corsair CMK8GX4M2B3000C15 Vengeance LPX 8GB (2x4GB) DDR4 3000Mhz ram would that stop the bottlenecking do you think?

Was your last card Nvidia or AMD?
If it was Nvidia, do a clean unistall with DDU and remove every piece of the driver.
Are you playing with Windows 7-8 or 10? Windows 10 improves a lot the FX performance, removing stuttering and improving fps.
