rx 480 with dual core

Solution

No one knows the answers to this (except maybe the engineers working at AMD).
You will struggle to run any of the latest games with that CPU. I wouldn't recommend it.

If you are looking at an RX 480 then I assume you're hoping to game in 1080p with High or possibly Ultra settings in the majority of games and get about 60 fps?

To avoid nasty CPU bottlenecks and disappointment I'd recommend something like an i5 6500K.

The RX 480 may be cheap, but it needs a good CPU to get the most out of it.

Okay, well at 720p with the dual core, I can only compare to my experience with my old quad-core Q9650 at stock speeds (3.0GHz) when I used it with a 720p monitor for a few months earlier this year. It's about 50% more powerful than your dual core.

It bottlenecked BF4 a bit in multiplayer with a 750Ti (!) although I avoided this eventually with an overclock. BF3 similar story. Rocket League was 'ok' but there were occasional frame drops on max settings. Still playable though. Track-mania was fine with max settings. Doom.... not good at all. Grid 2 fine on High to Ultra.

Some older games like Pro Evo Soccer 2012 and Assassins Creed 1 and 2 ran fine. The point being that it was the CPU that was holding back the 750Ti. When I OC-ed it to ~4.5GHz things were totally fine and that remained the case at 1080p. Doom still struggled but that was GPU related as well.

Basically, dropping the resolution to 720p doesn't help you very much when you are CPU bottlenecked. In some games it might (Minecraft) but in others such as BF4 it makes only a small difference in my experience. You still get the nasty frame drops.

But as you are planning on getting some sort of i5.... then at 720p with an RX 480 I imagine you'll be able to hit >/= 60fps at max settings. If you ever get a 1080p monitor then you'll still manage good frame-rates (if you have the i5). Benchmarks show the RX 480 gets around 60fps or more in most current games at Max settings. So getting the RX 480 with an i5 is a good idea.
