Ok, so I have made a series of stupid and not very carefully planned decisions that have led to this. I bought an sapphire nitro+ rx 580, not realizing how stupidly large the card is. My plan was to pair it with something like a i5 3570/i7 3770, basicly an 1155 socket cpu. I found a very good deal, an i5 3470 with mobo, cooler and 8gb 1600mhz ram for 50€. I got it from a friend upgrading to a newer combo. But me being an idiot didn't realise that he bought that pc prebuilt and it was one of those workstations with a new case and graphics card. So i cannot buy that because i cannot use the rx 580 in it. I looked around the local used parts market and realised all of those combos were either from workstations, or STUPIDLY expensive. My budget wont allow for anything newer than that, so only thing left is something older. So after an unnecessary ramble and explanation, my question. How stupid is it to use the rx 580 with an old 775 motherboard and something like a q9550 or q9650? And would these older boards even fit the graphics card? Would the lack of a pcie 3.0 be a problem? I would hope to overclock the processor.

No actually. I had a quite old pc and sold all of it except the case. I found a very short job and earned some money and wanted to put something decent together with used parts. I bought the rx 580 without realising that it was a huge card. I bought a psu for it aswell. A friend of mine bought a pc ~2 years ago with an i5 3470 in it. He wanted to upgrade just the cpu motherboard and ram so he was selling the i5 with its motherboard and ram. When i tested it I realised that the card physically doesnt fit and also psu compatibility problems. I didnt realise before that he bought a prebuilt from a company that basicly took a workstation and put a card in it. Now im stuck with 90€, no motherboard, no processor, no ram and no hard drive and an rx 580

Yes it's 90€. Sadly I live in bosnia and herzegovina, not many parts and usually stupid people that overprice everything. I'll see if I can come up with anything today, if not I'll ask to return the card and if i can do it I would be left with 170€ and a worthless PSU I paid 40€ for and cant return

Sounds like the first OEM machine you bought from a friend was a "BTX" form factor where the mobo is on the left side of the case (when looking at it from the front) but the expansion slots are still below the CPU. If the x16 slot is closest to the rear IO ports it only physically allows a single slot GPU to fit in.

Im sorry I can't help you find something better. I do know that by Intel 3rd gen, not many OEM machines were using BTX mobos anymore
