I currently have a RX 6800 AMD REF paired with a 11700K, I was able to pickup a GTX 1080TI FTW3 on EVGA Midweek Madness for $150. I am a bit of a cheap butt and video card prices are clearly falling.

How big in the performance gap between these 2 in 2022? I know the 1080ti is still a pretty decent card over all. If the performance gap isn't to large I feel I might be better off selling my RX 6800 now ($550-575) and using the GTX 1080ti till the 4xxx or 7xxx cards come out.

Any ideas or is this a horrid idea?

Thank you for your time.

Well, I can't give you exact numbers, but for me, the difference between my 1070 and 3070Ti was roughly twice the FPS at 1440p with the latter than what it was with the former in otherwise the same system, CPU was no factor since it is a 12700k. Probably a bit less for you, but certainly noticeable.
