Question PC crashes & driver timeouts since installing an RX 9070 XT ?

Hey guys,

So, I got an RX 9070 XT in early May, and since then, I’ve experienced a number of issues—mainly system crashes and driver timeouts. These problems didn’t exist with my previous setup, so I’m fairly confident they’re related to the new GPU.

The biggest challenge is that the issue is hard to reproduce and happens very sporadically. For example, I went an entire month without any problems at all, despite regular gaming. Sometimes, the screen just freezes for a few seconds. Other times, the PC shuts down abruptly (not a proper shutdown—more like pressing the reset button) and reboots. The Event Viewer showed kernel power issues (image below), so I replaced my old Corsair TX-M 650W PSU with a new 850W unit to rule out power delivery as the cause.

Unfortunately, the issue persisted. The crashing occured mainly during gaming (DOOM Eternal, Elden Ring, ForzaHorizon4) and sometimes when using stable diffusion for image generation. Moreover, not every driver timout shows in the event viewer as crticial failure, but some do (like the last one, the system froze, but didn't crash completely).

At first, I assumed it was early driver or software instability, but at this point, I’m getting pretty frustrated and am seriously considering an RMA. Before doing that, I wanted to ask for your opinions or suggestions.

Additional Details and Troubleshooting Attempts:

  • I initially had a slight undervolt of -50mV applied, but I'm now running at stock settings, except for a custom fan curve.
  • I tested both BIOS configurations on the GPU.
  • I’ve used DDU to do clean driver installs multiple times, trying different versions (currently on 25.6.3).
  • I swapped the PSU, as mentioned.
  • I also disabled Virtual Super Resolution, which I usually use when there's GPU headroom.

System Specs

CPU: 5800x3d
GPU: 9070 XT Hellhound
PSU: MSI AB 50GL 850 watt (old: Corsair TX-M650)
RAM: Corsair Vengance 4x8GB 3200
MB: MSI MAG Tomahawk B550

Kind regards and thanks in advance!

Using that card with a 650W PSU may have damaged it. Check the power sockets on the card for damage or a loose cable
how is that? no, there is nothing wrong on the power connector. like I said, I can run fur mark for hours and nothing is happening, but when firing up forza 4 it crashes after 3 minutes.

It could be an incompatibility with something else. There is another topic here where having a particular M.2 with the 9070XT causes the system to not even turn on.
Try updating the chipset drivers as a start, if they are not up to date.

What was your GPU before the 9070 XT? If it was an Nvidia, did you use DDU to clear out the driver before installing the Radeon one?

And yeah, using a 650 W PSU (and moreover an old one) with your new 9070 XT was not a great idea.

was not a great idea for PSU

The connector could be damaged if the graphics card was consuming too much power and the power supply could output more than 500 watts to the 6-pin connector, but this is not possible if the power supply is weak.

It definitely makes sense to wait for amd to release a new driver. The card is great !

well it didnt blow up or anything and from what I could tell, a descent 650 watt psu should be able to handle a 9070xt. So what is the worst that could have happened? The system being instable yes, but the card being somehow damaged, i struggle to believe that tbh. And my previous card was a 6700xt so an AMD card, but I used DDu nevertheless

why should I do that? I'm certainly not going to use a random driver installer third party thingy for no reason. I deleted the chipset driver and then reiinstalled.
Indeed, don't use that. Never use third-party software for driver install. Never. Those are most often scams that install crap and malware on your machine. There's absolutely no situation where this could be helpful.

The minimum recommended PSU for the 9070XT is 750W. And you can't just add TDPs and say this is what I need. GPUs and CPUs often have power spikes that can go way above their rated TDP (benchmarks showed that the 9070 xt can spike up to 400 W), so you need a significant amount of headroom to make sure you never exceed your PSU's capacity. And if your TX650M was quite old, I read that the 2019 version was rather a 600W PSU despite being rated 650W.

An underpowered PSU can cause voltage fluctuations and sudden current drops, which can damage sensitive electronic components. People think that only overloads can damage electronics but abnormal fluctuations can also do very bad. I'm not saying it's what happened to you, but it's certainly a possibility.

Have you tried reinstalling Windows?
I too had issue with randrom reboot/reset when I upgraded from a 3070Ti to 9070XT (DDU was also used to remove the Nvidia driver...) and it would only happened while playing certain games like Cyberpunk. After going through various diagnostics such as swapping RAM sticks, I was also sure it was the PSU (because of the Kernal Power error message.) Went to a local store to shop for a more powerful PSU; after the salesperson heard my story, he suggested that I reinstall windows as a last attempt before wasting $ on a new PSU (My current one is a 2.5yrs old 750W 80plus gold). And boy am I glad that I listened to him. Reinstall windows and AMD drivers and it did not crash a single time after. Not saying this solution will work for you but I'd though I would share my story.

Yes I installed a fresh copy of windows after I installed the card. And I checked the memory aswell by running memtest. Thanks for your suggestion
