RX470 or R9 290X?

Hi All,

I recently got a good deal on a Ryzen 3 1300x and Gigabyte AB350 Gaming Mobo. I am now currently in the market to get a used GPU as I'm currently running a Radeon HD 5770.

There are two cards I've found on the resell market:

Gigabyte RX470 G1 - $100

Reference R9 290x - $150

I know the R9 is more powerful and runs hotter from what I can see with my little knowledge of GPUs but I am wondering what is better with a lower end CPU and given the RX 470 is cheaper is it the better option?

Either really. Depends on what you want to achieve in the gfx sense.

Also consider GTX 1060 3GB, if the price is right.

If either is good I guess the cheaper choice? If I save the $50 I could put it towards an M.2 SSD or something.

All GTX models in my area are well over $200

Well, the R9 290X is the stronger card, but I'm not sure that it is $50 stronger. The RX 470 isn't a bad card, I run one in my desktop and I get respectable performance out of it. The 470 will also run much cooler and use less power.

Yes R9 290X is the strongest card here.
If i were you, i'm going for the strongest card with better PSU.
