I have a friend who is selling his GTX 980s because he is upgrading to a GTX 1080 Ti. He offered me a 980 for $300. Should I go for it or buy an RX480 8GB? My main concern with the 980 is that it only has 4GB of VRAM. I would likely keep the card for at least 2 years if I buy it and I'm sure I'll be on 1440p during that time frame.

Or should I just wait and see what AMD comes out with next? I'm interested whatever the successor to the RX480 ends up being.

Solution
$300 for an old Gtx 980 is an absolute scam, go for the RX 480.
I sold my old Gtx 970 to a friend for 100€ ($106). $200 is the max you should consider paying for the old Gtx 980.

I agree.

$300 is a ripoff. I'd honestly question his friendship going forward; not even kidding. It's also possible that he's completely unaware of the current market value of the card. Tell him "No thanks". Right this very moment there are GTX 980 Ti's selling for $300 on Ebay.
