Solution
Well lets talk about the motherboard since the i5-7500 and AMD 1500X are so close to each other in performance. If you're aiming for a system that is updatable over the next few years then the AMD system makes the most sense as you'll be able to reuse all the components when you go to replace the CPU, AMD has mentioned in the past that the current AM4 motherboards will be usable for the next several years, at least until 2020.

So when Zen+ comes out it should work in todays AM4 motherboards.

If you go with Intel and an H270 motherboard you will almost certainly need a new motherboard when its time to update.

As for gaming the i5-7500 and 1500X trade blows with the i5-7500 winning most of the games. The 1500X is not very far behind...

Now for everything else you might use a computer for like streaming games, video editing, image manipulation, etc. The 1500X is likely to do as well or better then the i5-7500.

If you want a long lasting upgrade, I would do neither.
Both options are somewhat comparable for a $200 class cpu.
If forced to pick, a 1500x with an overclock is probably better.

How long is a long time??
I do not know your total budget, but consider spending $235 for a I5-7600K and plan on an overclock in the 5.0 range.

The 1500x is the better choice, its a stronger cpu, while current games run fine on both the 1500x has the extra threads advantage for future titles, you can already see i5 running at 100% while the ryzen 1500x only at 60-70%, it has more headroom for developers. :)
