I know that this has been questioned to death recently but I am upgrading from my FX 6300 and am planning to overclock. I am wondering how significant the performance difference is between the ryzen 1600 and 1700, and how well an i7 7700k performs when gaming and Skyping or watching streams at the same time.

If the two ryzen CPUs has around the same performance when overclocked I would like to get a ryzen 5. However if the difference is significant I need to know how well the i7 handles this kind of multitasking to determine if I should drop a little extra cash for that much in-game performance

In gaming the 1600 overclocked to 4GHZ is the same as the 1700 overclocked to 4GHz. 1600 has better multi-threading performance than the 7700k. Games that take advantage of more cores, which some now do, and more here in the near future will the 1700 will pull ahead. If you plan on gaming on a 60HZ monitor 1080p or 4k the difference will not be noticeable. The 1700 has much better Multi-threaded performance. G.SKILL Flare X Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 3200 is the best compatible RAM atm https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820232530&cm_re=g.skill_flare-_-20-232-530-_-Product

The 1700 is a clear winner when gaming and doing other operations at the same time. Most games only use about half of the 1700's performance so its far less effected with other programs. The 1700 only requires a $50ish heatsink for near max overclocking. With higher end 3200~3466 RAM the performance is great. Also its important to note the 1151 200 series motherboards are end of life. Intel is bring 2066 Z299's with 7640, 7740, and skylake 8~12 cores CPU's in june.

ASRock X370 TAICHI Socket AM4 is probably the best board right now, but it's out of stock everywhere.
ASUS ROG Crosshair VI Hero is compatible with 3200MHz RAM
MSI B350 TOMAHAWK AM4 is a board a lot of reviews have used @~$100

If you want gaming 7700K is the clear Winner... That holds true unless you take that 100 buck go with a 1600 non x and add to the gpu. But a 7700k with a 1070 is better than a 1600 with a 1070... But a 1600 with a 1080 is better than a 7700k with a 1070

Actually its more around $160 because the 1600 $219 with a cooler able to hit 3.7~3.8Ghz. The 7700K on the other hand is $350 without cooler and to hit stock add $30ish for a cooler. One could get a higher end GPU with the 1700 with the near $60 savings.
