Ryzen 1700x or i7 7700k?

These CPUs will be working with a GTX 970 OC'd.

I will be using the PC primarily for gaming, and also live streaming game-play occasionally. I might do some basic video editing and rendering too for YouTube occasionally too.

However, the most important thing for me is maximum frames per second while gaming at 1080p / 1440p on ultra settings, and second most important thing is maximum frame rate while gaming while also streaming.

Which cpu should I go for?

for streaming, the fps u should be aiming for is above 60, with all the eye candy visual effects.
so for this workload, the ryzen 1600 oc'ed to 4ghz is enough. and its the better gaming cpu with less CCX latency n slightly higher oc of 4 compared to 3.9 ghz of 1700.
regarding video editing, both 1600 and 1700 beat the 7700k fair n square.

I'm aware that the ryzen cpus beat the 7700k in video editing. But as I say, the most important thing for me is maximum frame rate in gaming at 1080p / 1440p. I don't mind the little extra rendering and editing time during video editing etc, that's not that significant to me so long as the cpu I want is capable of doing the editing without problems.

Is the ryzen 1600 oc 4GHz really better than 7700k? I've been looking at benchmarks and 7700k seems to win every time by as much as 10%

TL;DR : I don't want to get a new rig, then be upset when my games dip below 60fps.

. At 1080 rez the i7 is better, but that Ryzen matches it at 1440, in either case the extra actual cores of the AMD chip will help with streaming, in this case the reply is: Neither, either will max some your requirements, but not all.

Sorry but that doesn't make any sense.
No matter the resolution the i7 will output more frames than the Ryzen
The difference you're seeing is the GPU limiting the frame output. But with the right card you'll getting higher FPS at any resolution with the i7.

However for live streaming I rather sacrifice some MAX-fps for better MIN-fps
I don't care if my CPU is able to reach 150 or 180 FPS, I do care though about FPS-drops below 60.
So for streaming I'd go with a Ryzen, the additional threads can distribute the load better and should result in more stable FPS

So it really comes down to what's more important to you -- some FPS you can't physically see but sound good on paper (yay I'm getting 200frames on a screen that can't display more than 60!) or not reaching the highest average but staying above the target FPS, even when streaming.

Ultimately both are great CPUs and both will be satisfying your needs.

Yeah I only care about 60fps, the reason why I say maximum frame rate as possible is for longevity of the build.

So would both CPUs offer no less than 60fps even when streaming?

If that is the case, would it not be better if I bought the cheaper option?

1 year ago an i7 was deemed unnecessary for gaming because no game used more than 4 threads.
Now you say 1 year from now the i7's 8 threads won't be enough.
Sounds legit. Not.

Why would a CPU max out on a "GPU relying state"?
GPU load doesn't affect CPU load.

Higher resolutions don't affect CPU load.

Stress is applied by calculations. The i7 can calculate faster due to higher clocks and higher IPC, only in symmetrical load situations, like encoding Ryzen is really faster.

Don't get me wrong, I'm team Ryzen in OP's situation.
But that explanation is just a load of crabs.

AMD RYZEN just came out and it's nearly as fast as Intel. Took Intel many generations of i series chips to be as fast as they are now. AMD created a processor nearly as fast as Intel i series in the first shot. AMD also beats Intel in multicore performance now. May not be as zippy but it's still a bad ass chip. I am thinking about building a Threadripper computer to hang out with my current build.

The answer is as simple as watching this : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BXVIPo_qbc4
As you can see (If you watched the video) The Ryzen 1700 keeps up with the I7 7700K in gaming. While the 1700 is clocked at 3.9GHZ the I7 7700K is at 5GHZ! Now that's pretty pathetic. I'd opt for the 1700 since it can be overclocked to the 1700X/1800X performance(Which i learned later on lol) . The Ryzen will be superior in your case as long as you have a decent OC to like 4.0GHZ or 3.9GHZ with 3200MHZ Memory.
Plus many people state that games with the Ryzen cpu's look smoother , and they offer higher minumum frame rates..... Choice should be obvious!

I'm not all that satisfied with my 7700k, but I went with it because RYZEN , I felt was just to new to buy. Felt like I should wait for RYZEN to improve first. On that note, I seem to get allot of temperature spikes. Runs hotter than hell clocked or not. It does not feel like its any better than my previous i5 4670k. Only improvements I see are with the graphics , they seem to work much better than the graphics on my old i5. My Kaby Lake does not feel any faster than what I had. For a $400 mobo and a $300 chip I was expecting so much more. Maybe I Should have went RYZEN.

Well you can always sell it on Craigslist lol. Anyways OP I'd suggest the Ryzen 7 1700 since you can Oc it to the 1700X to be better than it and perform like a 1800X. You also wouldn't need to purchase a cooler and the stock one has RGB 😉

many ppl have complained abt 7700k running hot. and its due to mobo's default settings giving free volts to 7700k to ramp up the clocks. head to ur mobo forums. ppl have used custom vcore offset settings manually and adjusted their bios so that the 7700k wont run on steroids anymore. the fault is with 7700k, and no fix is out yet 🙁
