Hey guys im not sure whether or not i should buy a ryzen 2600 or a i7 8700. Currently i have a i5 3570k and gtx 970 and the cpu died just recently so looking to upgrade my cpu. For the ryzen build it would cost around $650 while the i7 8700 build will cost around 750.

Ryzen build: ryzen 2600 +16 gb 3200mhz ddr4 ram + b450 tomahawk mobo msi + air cooler

Intel build : i7 8700 + 16 gb 3200 mhz ddr4 ram + cheap h310m board

Therefore 750 / 650 = 1.15

Currently im playing mostly fortnite on 1080p low settings and want to hit 144 fps for my 144hz monitor as im currently sitting at around 100 fps.

Hence will i expect the i7 8700 build to deliver 1.15 the performance of the 2600 or more?

I know once you go higher than 1080p, most games become gpu bound but im not too sure in my scenario given im trying to get higher fps over better quality settings.

Thank you in advance.

If this is a pure gaming build, then the 8400 would be the best on the Intel side in terms of value and will provide frame rates at near or better than the 2600 ..The 8700 will be better that the 2600 but only in a gaming context and depending on games anywhere from 5% to 20%. In fortnite at 1080P Epic settings it is 130FPS for the 2600 versus 155 FPS for the 8700...The 8400 gets 143 FPS

Also for the DDR4 3200 ram, you will need a Z370 motherboard with the cheapest around $89 for the MSI Z370A Pro...which will also allow you to upgrade to 9th gen Intel CPU's like the 9700K, 9800K and 9900K in the future..
The 8700 build will actually be cheaper since the H310 motherboards only support 2666mhz RAM. I would also not recommend a H board, get the B360, H boards are pretty basic.

However the Ryzen build will also be cheaper since you can actually use first gen Ryzen B350 motherboard with a BIOS update (many have them shipped from factory already with it). The value also increases because you can use faster RAM, overclock and it comes with a stock cooler.

Both are good chips, but the 8700 will still probably deliver better gaming performance.

Hey yeah i know 8700 would deliver better performance. But would it be 1.15 times better than 2600?
I happen to already have the ram so i wouldnt be able to change that.
Would the h310 mobos impact performance of gaming?
Not really bothered to be honest to get b350 board since i could be possibly buying old stock without the new bios and it would be a hassle.

No the H310 board wont effect performance, but considering a B360 board has more features and usually only 10 or so dollars more I would really really really suggest spending the difference.

As to answer if its worth getting the 8700 over the 2600 it's a hard one to answer. I think for most applications yes, the Ryzen is a better deal.

Before the release of the Ryzen 2600 I would have agreed, now its hard to say. They perform about the same but the Ryzen gives you more threads and overclocking.
