My current config is an R7 1700 OC to 3.7, 16GB RAM, and a GTX1080. Ashes of the Singularity on "Insane" or w/e it's called graphics have caused the card to blip once in the midst of a HUGE battle. I ticked it back a notch to "Extreme" and have had no issues. None of my other games even begin to cause issue, including Witcher 3 with EVERYTHING on max.
To be fair, I am using VSYNC to lock at 60 frames @1080 due to my current monitor.

Only a few of my games currently utilize many of the cores, but a few do...and Ashes uses it ALL.

Considering that you can readily pick up a 1700 for $200 right now, it's almost a no brainer for such a little gain. I will say, as you select your parts, pay CLOSE attention to the chipset to CPU and particularly make SURE your RAM is on the mobo list.
