Ryzen 3 1200 overheats with slight overclock

I have a ryzen 3 1200 and when I overclock it anything above its default at 3.1 ghz, my pc shuts off after about 20 minutes of gaming because the cpu gets too hot (above 90 degrees). I've seen that other people have been able to get overclocks to 3.7 ghz or higher on stock cooling, so maybe im just unlucky. I have tried replacing thermal paste a few times and still get the same results. Any ideas on what could be wrong?

while it is possible to OC with STOCK cooler it is inadequate, you'd be better off going with an aftermarket cooling solution

What did you set the CPU voltage to?

You probably have auto voltage which is why you have high temps. You can do light overclocking of 3.6-3.7ghz pretty easily on stock cooling.

You NEED to run manual voltages, for the stock cooler you need to stay below 1.35v (or possibly less) to stay below the max temp. Shoot for 80C as your max temp.
