I have FM2+ socket a68h cpu and i want to upgrade thr cpu to Ryzen 3 1200x, that requires am4 chipset. Is it possible to run it ? And if yes, do i have to upgrade my ram (probably ddr3) to ddr4 or will ddr3 work with a new am4 motherboard if i need to buy one in order to get the Ryzen 3 working.

Solution

Ryzen CPU's need motherboards that have AM4 SOCKET and either A320, B350, X370 or X470 CHIPSET.
Pls don't get confused between chipsets and sockets as they are a completely different thing.

If you want to upgrade your PC to a Ryzen CPU you will need to change your motherboard for a Ryzen compatible SOCKET AM4 and CHIPSET (either A320 or B350 judging from the cpu you want. X370 or X470 will be overkill)

You will also need to get DDR4...

You will also need to get DDR4 2133Mhz - 2933Mhz DUAL CHANNEL memory. It is important that you stick between those specified speeds as Ryzen has some memory stability issues with higher or lower speed memory. You also need DUAL CHANNEL (two sticks) so it will work with the motherboard.

I recommend that you get a MSI B350 Tomahawk $140AUD and matching RAM at 2400Mhz. I wouldnt suggest you go with the A320 chipset as it is mainly used for shitty prebuilts and does not support overclocking and many other features B350 has.

Good Luck :)
