Question Ryzen 3600 overheating

Hi,
I've just build this setup:

• Ryzen 3600
• B450 tomahawk max
• 16GB RAM 3400 Mhz
• One intake 120mm fan, one exhaust 120mm fan

When I ran Aida32 stability test, the CPU temp goes up to 90C et during gaming at around 80C. I noticed that the CPU fan (stock cpu fan) does not go above 1900 RPM even when the cpu temps are high.

in the BIOS, the cpu fan curve seems to be set correctly.

Any idea what that could be?

Is the stock CPU fan max speed really 1900 RPM?

How come the temps are so high? From what I read, a normal temp of the Ryzen 3600 under full load should be max 80C

I'm not sure about that exact cooler, but mine has a Low_Fast/high speed switch on cooler itself, maybe yours is stuck at Low.

I also noticed that the CPU is at 4Ghz when I run the AIDA64 stability test. Isn't the max frequency supposed to be 3.6 Ghz?

No, it is 3.6 base, with a max single core boost of up to 4.2ghz. Make sure your cooler is attached properly.

I did check that. The cooler is well screwed to the MB and is not loose. I did not apply any extra thermal paste as there was already some from the factory.

I also updated to the latest BIOS of the MB which did not change anything.

Your CPU is doing the best it can do with only one intake, one exhaust fan, and the stock cooler. I would not expect max performance with your current cooling setup. When you benchmark hardware as you are doing with Aida32 its intention is to stress the hardware, "stress test" implies the compnent will be stressed so don't be surprised if you are hitting thermal limit.

I'm not worried about the performance but about the high temps. Most of other people are reporting temps of around 80C when running the Aida64 stability test

I will add another intake 120mm fan on the top of the case to see if it helps

Open bench vs poor airflow case. That's your difference.

So without changing the airflow (I'm waiting for 2 new fans to arrive), I undervolted the CPU to 1,2 V as suggested on many other sites and the results are promising:

Stock config:
Max clock: 4,2 Ghz
CPU temp at idle: 52 C
CPU temp at full load: 95 C
CineBech: 3200
GeekBech: 1090

Undervolt to 1,2V:
Max clock: 4,2 Ghz
CPU temp at idle: 48 C
CPU temp at full load: 80 C
CineBech: 3500
GeekBech: 1200

So under load I have 15C less than before and the performances are better.

Open bench vs poor airflow case. That's your difference.

I'll test again once I have more fans but it looks like the airflow was not the only parameter to change in order to achieve the 80C
